How are you a changemaker?
The term changemaker carries ambiguity. While the term has undeniably been used to characterize activists throughout history, today it is embedded in our youth. A changemaker is not used to define a specific action. Young individuals are most definitely the changemakers of the future, whether that be through discourse or direct action through grassroots projects.
For me, what defines a changemaker is someone who can see from both sides. Being exposed to what one is trying to change is vital, whether that be through talking to people who combat an issue on a daily basis or taking part in community service that is hands-on and in the core of the issue.
What I have learned from the Machen Center and my grandmother, Ms. Machen, is the significance of being part of organizations and doing work that is not from a periphery level but at the core. I am so grateful to have this exposure because it has carried into all aspects of the work I do. Whether at the Machen Center, at my own organization Chance 2 Dance, or even at my school, such exposure has allowed me to be a true changemaker. What the Machen Center and I both believe is that to truly make change one has to see first hand what they are combating, and begin there.
"What is ONE simple thing others can do to be changemakers?”
One simple thing people can do to be a changemaker is to volunteer at organizations that make a change from the core. All levels of service are beneficial, but viewing firsthand and fully immersing into a situation is most impactful.
